Thursday, December 20th, Roby Lions Club continued to promote literacy and reading with their semi-annual distribution of books to each child in Early Education through Grade 5 for their holiday reading enjoyment. This year Rotan Lions Club joined Roby in this project and also received books for the same age group in Rotan. These books were donated by First Book through grants awarded to the clubs. The clubs were responsible for shipping charges. This activity is part of the Lions Clubs International Reading Action Program, a global campaign that focuses on implementing reading and education projects to help increase literacy rates worldwide.

“Lions are dedicated to providing service. That renowned dedication helps us in everything we do – including participation in the Reading Action Program to promote reading,” said Roby Lion President Carolyn Hargrove. In addition to the clubs’ literacy projects, they conduct a variety of service projects including provision of eyeglasses to underprivileged children, collection of used eyeglasses for recycling and student scholarship opportunities. The clubs also support Texas Lions Camp for children with disabilities, diabetes and Down’s Syndrome as well as other charitable activities.
