Rotan Senior, Cole Van Poppel, collected his first perfect game of the 2020 baseball season.

There was perfection on the mound Monday, and it was a good day for Rotan as the Yellowhammers came through with a shutout 3-0 victory against the Valley Patriots.

The Hammers started off the first inning on defense with senior Cole Van Poppel on the mound. It was a quick three up three down as Van Poppel struck out the first three batters in the Patriots lineup, putting an end to the first half of the inning.

Freshman shortstop Zac Flores started the Yellowhammers off in the box with a hard ground ball to right field, reaching first. Flores was caught stealing second while freshman Jaxon Warren struck out looking.

Van Poppel doubled on a fly ball to right field, and senior Noah Foster struck out for the third out, ending the bottom of the first inning.

The Patriots offense didn’t last long as Van Poppel struck out Valley’s next three batters, giving the Yellowhammers another chance to get their bats going in the bottom of the second inning.

Junior center fielder Oscar Trejo was hit by a pitch, giving the Hammers a free runner on base. Trejo stole second, third, and scored when freshman Johnny Lujan-Perez put the ball in play with a sacrifice bunt.
