Lady Hornets 2-0 in District

Kenedee Shugart scored a game-high 21 points along with teammate Jenna Berry, leading the Lady Hornets in a 69-24 victory over Trent in Friday night’s district opener. The win gave the Lady Hornets their first of the district season.

Gracie English scored 12 points and 12 rebounds earning, her first double-double of the season, while Berry totaled 11 rebounds, also earning her second double-double. The Hornets scored a total of 19 points in the first quarter. 36 by halftime.

Both Jayton teams put a win in the books

The Lady Jays beat the Spurettes over Christmas break for a district game. For the fi rst time in several years the Lady Jays had a 12 point lead on Spur by the end of the game 56-42.

Hard work and determination led the girls to win one of highly anticipated games of the season. The Lady Jays defense dominated on the court and executed their offense almost perfectly.

Lady Hammers Win Distict Opener

Coach Bell utilized each member of the Lady Yellowhammers to spark a victory over the visiting Lady Red Raiders on January 5. In the 2nd period, Denton and her teammates outscored the Lady Red Raiders 20-8 to take a 38-19 lead…a district opener for both teams. Bowen continues to lead her teammates in the rebounding category with 9, Denton led her teammates in the scoring category with 30 points and Ballard is known for her defensive role contributed 11 points...Also, Ballard led the team with assists (3). The team defeated Lueders-Avoca 68-38. Stats as follows: Denton-30 pts, 4 RBS, 2 steals, and 1 assist; Ballard- 11 pts, 4 RBS, 3 assists, and 1 steal; Corn-10 pts, 5 steals, and 3 RBS; Bowen-5 pts, 9 RBS, and 2 assists; Dunn-5 pts, 3 RBS, and 2 assists; Garza-3 pts, 3 steals, and 1 RB; Anderle-2 pts and 4 RBS; Harris-2 pts and 2 RBS; Gentry-3 steals and 1 RB…A complete team effort increases the percentage of being a team of success.

Aspermont Lady Hornets Defeat Crosbyton Chiefs

The Aspermont Lady Hornets defeated the Crosbyton Chiefs 50-36 before officially beginning their Christmas holiday.

Kenedee Shugart was highpoint for the Hornets tallying 17 points for the game, with Mady Milloy trailing just behind scoring 14 points. Gracie English and Jenna Berry each scored 7 points of their own.

Jayton Holiday Tournament

Christmas break means the return of the Jayton Holiday Tournament for both boys and girls teams in the area.

The first game for the Lady Jays varsity was against the Rule Bobcats. The Lady Jays sprinted up and down the court barley having to make a defensive move. By the final buzzed the Lady Jays out scored Rule 41-11.

Roby Lions win against Knox City Greyhounds

The Knox City Greyhounds came to Roby on December 18th to play the Lions and Lady Lions in a game prior to the semester break. The Lions and Lady Lions won all three games. The J.V. Boys won 58-33, Caleb Helm had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and A.J led the boys in scoring with 21 points. The boys jumped out early and never trailed. Individual stats: A.J Ramirez 21 points,2 rebounds, 1 assist, , 5 steals, Caleb Helm 12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, Laith Abu- Ajameh 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, Houston Harris 7 points, 1 rebound, Zachary Morgan 6 points, 5 rebounds, Brendon Barriere 4 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 blocks.

Jayton varsity basketball programs successful

The Jaybirds dominated this past weekend in the annual Robert Hall Chevrolet Tournament. Winning three out of four games put their overall record at 9-3 for the season so far.

First game for Jayton was against the Hamlin Pied Pipers. The top scorer for the Jaybirds in this game was Tye Scogin with 22 points. Jayton won with over 20 points making the score 45-22 at the end of the game.

Friday’s morning game for the Jaybirds was against the Roby Lions. Jayton and Roby are ranked closely to each other in the top 20. Ending the game ten points ahead (63-53), Jayton celebrated and got ready for the afternoon game.

Lady Yellowhammers Win Championship game

The Rotan High School hosted their 2nd Hoop Basketball Tournament on December 14-16.The Rotan Lady Yellowhammers won their first game over Snyder JV; won the second game against Throckmorton Lady Greyhounds… Mackenize Ballard (great defense against their low post player) and her teammates held Throckmorton to 25 points as the lady Hammers won 30-25. Stats as follows: Denton-13 pts, 8 assists, and 4 RBS; Dunn-6 pts, 4 steals, and 1 assist; Bowen-6 pts, 6 RBS, 3 assists, and 1 steal; Corn-5 pts, 4 RBS, and 3 steals; Ballard-5 RBS and 3 steals; Fortuna-3 steals; Hurt-2 RBS, and Gentry- 1 RB.

The championship game featured the Lady Yellowhammers vs Lady Hornets of Aspermont on December 16 at 7:30 p.m. The Hammers jumped out to an 8-0 run with 4:18 left in the opening period, but the Hornets closed the gap at the end of the 1st period… Rotan 11 and Aspermont 10.

Varsity Baksetball in Jaybird Land

The Varsity Boys basketball team made their -sic. At the end of the tournament they won two games and lost two games.

Thursday night for their first game in the tournament The Jaybirds went head to head for a rough game with Tolar. By halftime each team had shown what they are made of and the score was 15-18 Jaybirds in the lead.

The end of the fourth quarter usually means the game has come to an end unless you’re tied up 30-30 with Tolar then you fight till the end. Both teams were looking to rise above by the end leading to a second overtime after ending the first 33-33. Thankfully the Jaybirds took bigger strides, made cleaner shots, and left all they had on the court with the end score of 38-34.
