The gates are officially open at the Double Mountain Governmental Downs, and the first race in the FY2023 Budget Season is underway with Good Will taking a slight lead as Tension & Potential Budget Cuts keep pace just a few links behind.

With Cracked Jokes & Smiles squeezing Snarky Comments to the outside of the pack, Good For Taxpayers could have a chance to show at the end of this multi-furlong race to September.

Spectators should also keep an eye on the City of Rotan’s smaller race, where Willful Blindness, Lack of Clarity, and La, La, La, We’re Not Listening is way out in front of Wait Let’s Think and Stop Drinking the Kool-Aid Batman. With Common Since — the anticipated favorite in this race — still stuck in the stall, Possible Lawsuit still has an outside chance of beating Toothless Rules, Civil Disobedience, or Russian Cocktails to the finish line.

With Look At Our Learnin’ keeping less than a link between Tax Dollars for Privatization coming into the clubhouse turn, Panic Buttons For All breaks out in front of More Cowbell Security & Other Unfunded Mandates as they turn down the home stretch. With Legislative Aftermath coming on strong, everyone is keeping their eyes on What Will Abbott Do Next as the Taxpayer Derby continues.

*** I’ll be honest, I have no good explanation for why I editorialized my news commentary into the style of a horse-racing announcer...

Probably to show why I’m cooler than Chat-GPT. Although, it could be that I am generally less aggravated with local officials than usual.

That’s not to say I’m aggro-voided. As long as the Rotan City Council members still lean over the railing when it comes to balancing personal freedom against personal accountability, I’m going to be watching. When they decide to hop the fence and set up for a swan dive into civil rights violations, I’m going to shout.

But if nobody listens, I don’t expect much will change other than attorney billables, and don’t go saying I didn’t warn you when ticked off pet owner sticks a flaming chicken through the mail slot. Seems like everyone is on edge out there lately.

Everyone, that is, except the Fisher County Commissioners Court... Which is kind of weird, right?

All it took was a few election cycles, two years of global pandemic, a series of intense and ongoing legal battles, worldwide supply chain disruptions, and the collective pressure of rising inflation, but it seems the Fisher County Court found its happy place.

In truth, good reader, I will admit I felt more encouraged and came away from Monday’s meeting with a better outlook on the future of Fisher County than I have from any other June budget talks I recall attending. I would dare to say — with the exception of the dangerously close to wandering off the ledge Rotan City Council — just about every governing body seems to be prepared for engaging in thoughtful conversations about how to spend taxpayer money.

While I would much prefer a Happy, happy; joy, joy ending with responsible tax dollar management across the board, it’s just June and it’s still raining. Let’s see if officials still talk about sharing after a little heat and pressure in the months to come.
