Flags Flying over the Anson VFWThe Caffey-Farnsworth VFW Post 8929 in Anson will celebrate its grand reopening Saturday, May 9, welcoming veterans, families and community members back into a renovated gathering place built around service, fellowship and remembrance.

This Saturday’s grand reopening will be held from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the post, located at 3230 County Road 497 in Anson. The first 20 people through the door will receive a free one-year annual Canteen membership. The reopening marks a new chapter for the Anson VFW post, which was chartered in 1966 and has served Jones County and the surrounding region for nearly six decades. Known as the Caffey-Farnsworth Post, the organization honors local Jones County veterans from the Caffey and Farnsworth families who served during World War II, including Marine Larry Dale Caffey, who was killed on Okinawa in 1945, and Staff Sgt. Elmer Lee Farnsworth, a U.S. Army Air Corps member killed in action over Germany in 1944 and awarded the Purple Heart.

Like many small-town veterans organizations, the Anson post faced challenges in recent years that led to a temporary closure. Under new leadership, members have spent months cleaning, renovating and modernizing the facility.

Senior Vice Commander Simon Wade said the effort came from a shared determination not to let the post disappear.

“We refused to let this important community asset fade away,” said Wade.

The new leadership team is led by Commander Lance Pollard, with Wade serving as senior vice commander. Wade is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal officer, former Arizona State Trooper and former Fisher County Sheriff. Saturday’s open house will include tours of the updated facility, food, drinks, music, pool, shuffleboard and gaming machines. Wade said he will be cooking cheeseburgers and hot dogs with chips and baked beans. A flag raising ceremony will also be held, with veterans and VFW leaders from across the Big Country expected to attend.

Moving forward, post plans to maintain regular hours, including Wednesday and Saturday evenings, while hosting monthly events and programs aimed at supporting veterans and their families. Wade said the goal is to make Post 8929 a welcoming gathering place for veterans across Jones, Fisher and surrounding counties.

The post is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend regardless of membership status. VFW membership eligibility follows national guidelines, including honorable service in the U.S. Armed Forces and qualifying overseas service.
