DPS Troopers, Sweetwater PD, and TDCJ officers assisted in rearresting Fisher County inmate William Vaughn, who escaped from custody while being treated at the Fisher County Hospital on Tuesday.
Vaughn was in custody at the Fisher County Jail after a series of arrests that ended last week, where he faced four charges of evading arrest — each a felony — as well as a felony family violence charge. Vaughn had been receiving treatments for serious health problems prior to his arrest, and on Tuesday, deputies transported him to the Fisher County Hospital.
While under examination and awaiting test results, without warning, Vaughn leapt from the table and burst from the room where he later pushed through the ER doors, fleeing into the surrounding vegetation. Vaughn was shirtless and wearing no shoes. Multiple agencies, tracking dogs and horse-mounted officers conducted a search of the area, later taking Vaughn into custody around 3 p.m.
In addition to the original charges, Vaughn now faces additional charges associated with Unauthorized Absence From a Correctional Facility (Escape) as well as Criminal Mischief. Sheriff Randy Ford said other charges are pending.
Ford also said his department — likely in cooperation with the DA’s office — would be conducting an internal investigation into the escape and would act accordingly pending the outcome of that investigation.
