The Fisher County Rodeo Association is set to host an electrifying prelims mutton bustin' competition, aiming to provide more young riders a chance to shine in the upcoming rodeo later this month. The event is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Fisher County Rodeo Arena.

The initiative comes as the Fisher County Rodeo Association continues its efforts to rejuvenate the event's charm after experiencing heightened community engagement in recent years, particularly following the restrictions and lock downs during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Historically a major attraction within and beyond the county, the rodeo saw a remarkable turnout last year, drawing one of its largest crowds in recent memory.

Families and rodeo enthusiasts alike flock to the event, with many eager young spectators anticipating the heart-pounding mutton bustin' and the exhilarating calf scramble. In mutton bustin', young riders endeavor to hold on for dear life atop a spirited sheep, mirroring the daring exploits of adult competitors on bucking broncos and raging bulls. The victor of this pint-sized rodeo showdown walks away with a belt buckle just like their adult counterparts.

The calf scramble, another crowd favorite, involves a flag attached to a calf, with a group of children attempting to snatch the flag from the galloping animal. The triumphant contestant claims a coveted prize for their agile efforts.

Last year's surge in attendees also brought about a challenge: accommodating the ever-increasing number of eager kids who aspired to participate in the calf scramble and mutton bustin'.

“Last year had one of the biggest calf scrambles I've ever seen,” said Casey Terry, association member and event promoter.

These cherished events are traditionally integrated into the rodeo program, yet the overwhelming demand posed a logistical hurdle, leaving several young enthusiasts unable to contend for the sought-after buckle.

This year, the Fisher County Rodeo Association has adopted an early start to address the demand, orchestrating a prelims event on Thursday, August 24. The mutton busters will compete for 24 coveted spots, which will be divided between the Friday and Saturday Rodeo showcases. The top 12 performers will be granted the opportunity to select their preferred day for a repeat performance.

However, the association remains committed to inclusivity, offering a 'slack ride' following the Saturday Rodeo's conclusion for those participants that were unable to compete but still want to ride.

This informal competition, taking place before the rodeo dance featuring Lance Shaw and his 419 Swing Band takes the stage, aims to ensure that no aspiring riders are left out or miss their chance to dazzle the crowd and show off for parents.

Despite various changes and expansions geared toward boosting revenue and event growth, the Fisher County Rodeo Association remains steadfast in its commitment to affordability. The entry fee for mutton bustin' remains at a reasonable $20 per ride, inviting young rodeo enthusiasts to tighten their grip and brace for an unforgettable experience.

With less than two weeks remaining until the preliminary mutton bustin' event, young contenders are encouraged to hone their skills and gear up for a memorable ride at the Fisher County Rodeo Arena.

There is no charge for admittance for the Thursday night Prelims other than the $20 a ride for the young contestants.
