Below are some random things that float around in my head when I am trying to make sense of the world after calling it a day. It’s not a wise move on my part as it often impedes my ability to drift off to sleep.
Acknowledging contradictions and paradoxes is an age-old exercise. I am guessing that’s what Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle did centuries ago and what old-timers do today during their morning coffee shop visits. Like all of them, I find that mulling over current topics helps me process what I don’t understand or guides me to pursue answers to what piques my curiosity.
Late-night thought sessions don’t have to be deep in nature. Sometimes I just try to make as many words as I can on the New York Times Spelling Bee game on my phone.
Here’s a glimpse, though, of what has crossed my mind of late. The list might generate your own healthy discussions with friends, family, or yourself. On the other hand, it might just put you to sleep.
…We have access to more information but are less informed and less educated.
…We are devoted to our children and grandchildren but don’t prioritize the earth. …Some of us like coconutflavored snow cones but refuse to eat coconut cake.
…We wear “don’t tread on me” shirts but allow for political government overreach.
…We love God but avoid church.
…We teach children to control themselves but cuss out customer reps on the phone.
…We don’t appreciate failure being a necessary step for success.
…We award a peace prize for bombing countries.
…We strive for perfection, which is an imperfect quality.
…We believe in goodness, kindness, and mercy but trust a bully’s bravado.
…We can choose from 40 different toilet seat lids in a hardware store but have basically only two choices of political parties.
