Jose Eduardo Velez, also known as Jose or Joe, age 90, passed away on July 19, 2026, in Arlington, Texas. Joe was a man defined by his deep discipline, honesty, and courage—traits that shone brightly during his dedicated military career. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1968, proudly serving with the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Division 'Screaming Eagles,' and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). He later continued his service in the National Guard from 1972 to 1981.
Known for his outgoing personality and generous heart, Joe was fiercely loyal and respectful to everyone he met. He was a truly reliable presence in the lives of those who knew him. He found great joy in woodworking and loved working the land, spending countless hours dedicated to his crafts.
Jose was born to Esteban Ruiz Velez and Maria Garcia Velez on August 14, 1935, in Rotan, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Richard Velez, Esteban Velez Jr., Zulema Gattis, Madrid Velez, Maria Gaytan and Virginia Carr.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rafaela ('Lita' or 'Fela') Velez; his daughters, Yvonne Broussard and Yvette Bragg, along with her husband, Roger; and his son, Edward Steven Velez. He is also survived by his five sisters: Zita Carrasco, America Yanez, Argentina (Luther) Yanez, China Silva, and Carrolina (John) Tweedy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe's legacy lives on through his five grandchildren, Erika Broussard, Joseph Broussard, Tanner Bragg, Taryn Bragg, and Trevor Bragg, as well as his 12 cherished great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Moore Bowen Road Funeral Home, 4216 South Bowen Road, Arlington, TX 76016, on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Funeral Mass: 8:30 A.M., Monday, August 3, 2026, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 5819 W. Pleasant Ridge Rd., Arlington, TX 76016.
A Committal Service will take place at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy., Dallas, TX 75211, on August 3, 2026, at 10:30 A.M.
A reception will be held immediately after the Committal Service at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
