It would be a disservice to romanticize my recent train trip, one which took me to Virginia and then to North Carolina and then back to Slidell, Louisiana. The fact that the trip was not luxurious or at times convenient does not minimize the advantages of traveling by rail.

The development of the modern livestock show is a fascinating bit of history. To Americans, that history dates to March 1896, when a small exhibition of animals was held under shade trees in Fort Worth, Texas. That event spawned interest and other similar events.
