House OKs $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises

House OKs $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises

The Texas House last Thursday passed two education-related bills, one that allocates $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises and another to increase the annual per-student base funding from $6,160 to $6,300 – a 2.3% increase.

Fisher County Historical Commission

On May 2nd the Fisher County Historical Commission had a field trip to four Fisher County cemeteries. They started off meeting Dan Byarly at his gate. Mr. Byarly unlocked his gates so that we could visit the Woods Chapel Cemetery back on his place near Sylvester.

Texas corn acres decline as national crop grows

Corn acres are expected to increase nationally this season, while planted acres in Texas are expected to decline, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. Much of Texas continues to experience significant drought conditions, which may be impacting planting decisions.

Boggers from across the state are gearing up to set off seismic sensors and sling a little mud at this Saturday’s Fisher County Red Dirt Mud Bog at the sheriff’s posse arena in Rotan. After the day’s events, a dance is scheduled at 8 p.m. at the pavilion, and all are welcome to attend.

Mark Sellers of Hamlin, Texas took along the DMC on a road trip and made a special stop in Tombstone, Arizona to visit the Tombstone Epitaph newspaper office. The Tombstone Epitaph, founded in 1880 by John Clum, is the oldest continually published newspaper in Arizona.
